This is the X10 Powerhouse brand wireless supervised P.I.R. (passive infrared) motion sensor model number SP554A for use with any X10 wireless security system base receiver (PS561 or DC821) or it can be added to any X10 wireless security system (DS7000, DC8700, SS5400, SS5402). Also works with some Radio Shack wireless security systems. When motion is detected, the sensor sends an RF signal back to the security console setting off the alarm.

This sensor is first initialized into your security systems console so that it can be recognized. A random code is automatically generated during set-up, which uniquely identifies each sensor. The security console logs-in each of these random codes as the next zone in sequence (up to 16 zones). You can install as many security sensor types (SP554A and MS10A motion or DS10A door/window sensors) as needed for a total of up to 16.

This sensor is self checked every few hours for proper operation. If a sensor does not report in, this could mean a weak or dead battery or that it has been tampered with. The security console will not arm if the motion sensor hasn't reported in, but this can be overridden by pressing the console's BYPASS button. It detects any movement within a distance of up to 40 feet at a 90 degree field of view.

These motion sensors have the ability to sound the chime on the security system console when motion is detected. If you set the console to RUN 2, the console will sound a chime every time the motion sensor detects any motion (sensor has to be set to NORMAL). If set to RUN 1, there is no chime. Any motion detected is indicated via the zone indicator LED's regardless if set in RUN 1 or RUN 2. The newer PS561 and MS10A systems have done away with this feature for some reason. These are an older style motion sensor but they do restore this ability to even the newest PS561 security system consoles.

The SP554A has a 3 position sensitivity selector switch so the sensor can be set to trip the alarm if any movement is detected (position 1 for most sensitive) or if two movements or continuous movement is detected (position 2 for less sensitive). Note: The less sensitive setting doesn't make it pet immune. I've found the best way to get around false alarms from a pet is to put some white vinyl tape across the bottom of the "eye" to raise its field of "vision" above the height of your dog or cat. You will need to tinker with this to get the right amount of coverage to match your area being protected and your pet. Position 3 (OFF) on the selector switch stops it from sensing any motion at all.

Has a Home/Away/NORMAL selector switch. If the selector switch is set to Home/Away, the security console will only sound the alarm when it's been armed in the away mode. If the system was armed in the home mode, the SP554A will still sense motion but will not set off the alarm allowing you to move about the house. Also, there is no chime or LED activity indicated on the security system console when the SP554 is set to Home/Away.

What makes the SP554A different from the MS10A is that when the selector switch is set to NORMAL, the SP554A will always set off the alarm when the system is armed in either Home or Away modes. This allows you to have some motion sensors with the ability to always sound the alarm regardless of arming mode and other motion sensors to only sound the alarm depending on what mode you armed the system in--Home or Away. When set to NORMAL, the LED indicators on the console show when motion is detected in both RUN 1 or RUN 2 modes. The chime only sounds when in RUN 2 mode.
